The City of Colorado Springs, Colorado (the “City”) is a municipal corporation and a home rule city duly organized and existing pursuant to Article XX of the Constitution of the State of Colorado and the Charter of the City of Colorado Springs. This position will perform professional legal services for the City of Colorado Springs and its enterprises, as part of a team of attorneys in the City Attorney's Office. Responsibilities and Duties
This attorney will serve as one of five direct reports to the City Attorney/Chief Legal Officer and the Deputy City Attorney. The attorney's duties will include supervising five (5) Prosecutors in the City Attorney's Office - Prosecution Division and managing that unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of division attorneys primarily dedicated to prosecuting violations of the City Code in the Colorado Springs Municipal Court. Prosecutors also advise City departments regarding prosecution issues, appear in administrative hearings regarding City business licensing violations, and initiate/defend municipal prosecution appeals before applicable appellate courts. This attorney is expected to assist on related legal matters for other divisions of the City Attorney's Office when requested.
This position will report directly to the Deputy City Attorney and will provide legal services for management and staff and other matters as assigned. All attorneys for the City of Colorado Springs are part of the City Attorney's Office. All attorneys are exempt and at-will to the City Attorney/Chief Legal Officer.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Competencies
The attorney in this position must be able to analyze, interpret, and apply legal principles, facts, evidence, and legal precedent. The attorney must possess superior oral and written communication, supervisory, interpersonal, and collaboration skills and the ability to work as a successful member of a team of attorneys representing the City. The successful candidate should possess extensive working knowledge of criminal law and procedure and of the rules of evidence.
|It is required that the attorney have a J.D. or L.L.B. from an ABA accredited law school. It is desired that this attorney has ranked at least in the upper one-half of his or her law school class and has a minimum of two (2) years in the active practice of law with experience working in prosecution matters referenced in the section entitled “Required Skills, Knowledge and Competencies,” and a minimum of two (2) years of legal supervisory or mentoring experience to other attorneys. |
Admission to the Colorado Bar.
Superior research, writing, academic, and oral and written communication skills are also required.
|It is preferrred that the attorney possesses a working knowledge of the Colorado Rules of Municipal Court Procedure and of state statutes regarding Municipal Courts, criminal law, and traffic enforcement. |
It is also preferred that the attorney has experience with administrative law, preferably including a familiarity with the Colorado Liquor Code and related regulations and case law.
Knowledge regarding electronic case management systems is also helpful in this position.
